"Once upon a time, there was only Damballah. The great snake lay beneath the Earth, protecting it from falling into the watery abyss below. He lay still for a long time, but eventually had to move. With his movements he created the mountains and the valleys. Sacred water was released, creating the oceans, rivers, streams and springs. The stars were shaken up into the sky. Then the first rains fell, and in the guise of the first rainbow, Aido-Wedo appeared. Damballah and Aido-Wedo fell in love."
One of the most important of all the lwa (spirits) in the Haitian Vodou and Louisiana Voodoo traditions, Damballah and the other lwa, act as intermediaries between Bondye—the Supreme Creator, who is distant from the world—and humanity. They are not simply prayed to, they are served. They are each distinct beings with their own personal likes and dislikes, distinct sacred rhythms, songs, dances, ritual symbols, and special modes of service. Contrary to popular belief, the lwa are not deities in and of themselves; they are intermediaries for, and dependent on, a distant Bondye.
Damballah is one of the most important lwa. He is associated with creation and is considered the loving Father. He brings peace and harmony.
Aido-Wedo is also ascociated with snakes and is Damballah’s partner in creation, A creation shared between male and female.
The snake god loves the precious metal silver and if worshippers find favour with the god he rewards them by leading them figuratively or literally to Earthly riches.
This ring honors Damballah and Aido-Wedo and represents their love and the power of universal love.
