It was a close friend of mine's birthday the other day. He is an incredible Irish flute player, with strong ties to the Celtic culture. What better way to celebrate his birthday then to make him a custom silver pendant.
After going through my books on Celtic symbols and mythology, as well as the obligatory google searches, I settled on the Triquetra.
The Triquetra is considered to be one of the oldest Celtic symbols, dating back to the Iron Age , as early as 500 BCE. It has been found on Runestones in Northern Europe and early Germanic coins.
The Trinity Knot was used to symbolize the Triple Goddess as well as representing the three elements - Air, Water and Earth. The circle that is often interlaced with the Triquetra represents the bond between the three elements. As the line of the Triquetra is unbroken, its often represents Unity, Protection and Everlasting Life. It can be seen as the Celtic symbol for strength.
I spent a good deal of time carving this piece out of wax, to give it clean lines for the casting process. But as with all of my pieces, I love to see perfect imperfections in the silver. With this pendant, I hand cast it so that it would look old and beaten.... like it had been underground for the past 1000 years. Needless to say, I am very happy with the end result, as was my friend.
I also made a handmade camphor box, with a Triquetra symbol burnt into the lid.
